Hula Soup was the thesis film for Columbia College MFA student Neo Shen. His goal with the film's color was to capture the raw emotions through a naturalistic grade, emphasizing the coolness of the brothers' current relationship and how they regain the warmth of their youth. Each scene we'd have to balance what felt real, oftentimes that meant what was authentic to the emotion of the scene pushed away from the naturalism into a more vivid palette. The 20 minute runtime featured multiple locations throughout different points in time, so I had to take extra care to ensure each had a distinct look while being consistent with the overall aesthetic. As finishing editor, I also married picture and sound, placed the captions, and prepared the final deliverables.
